Pokemon battling basics
We are expecting a few oldies to come back to the forum for GL positions and most of them aren’t very Pokemon literate. I will try and change that! We’ll start by looking at a glance.
Pokemon have six stats
HP: Hit points we are all smart here I don’t need to explain this one.
Attack: Used to deal damage. Calculated againsts defense
Defense: Used to minimize damage.
SP. Atk: Another way to deal damge. Calculates with SP def.
Speed: Determines which pokemon will move first
Ability: A passive power that helps your pokemon in battle. Most pokemon have three abilities some are better than others. Greninja’s ability is Torrent.
Nature: You can’t see the nature in this picture but you can see the effects of nature. Natures boost one stat but lower another. Natures will not boost or lower HP. This pokemon’s nature is Mild meaning it’s SP ATK (In red) is boosted and Defense (in blue) is lowered. The stat change is 10%.
Type: An attribute used for damage calculation. A pokemon’s type is used to resist a move or not. One big game of rock, paper, Scizor. Scizor cuts paper, Scizor Bullet Punches rock.
Hidden Values: There are two other things that go into your stat calculation Effort Values and Individual Values.
EVs: EV’s are a once invisible value that boost your stat. 4 EVs=1 stat. You are able to have 510 total EVs but only 255 in a given stat (Although you only need 252 because 4 does not go into 255 very well) So you can fill two stats with max 252 and put 4 in one more stat with 2 useless EVs left over. Or you can do other combinations.
How do I get EVs?: Each pokemon has an EV yield meaning when you KO that pokemon. Your pokemon will gain it’s yield. So if you KO’d an Abra with your Dedenne. Your Dedenne would gain 1 Sp. Atk. EV because Abra’s EV yield is +1 Sp. Atk. This process takes a lot of time and sucks. BUT in Pokemon X & Y the feature Super Training was introduced. Super Training allows you to get many EVs quickly. One session will give you either 4, 8, or 12 EVs in the stat you picked. This number can be doubled if you use a double bag which doubles the EVs you get in a session so you can get 32 in one session! There are also punching bags that can raise your EVs they are sized S, M, L. Giving you 1, 4, and 12 EVs. there are also bags to help you in your next ST session (like the double bag) Using ST and Punching Bags will get you EV trained in about 2 hours.
IVs: IVs are a pain. Each pokemon is assigned IVs when you catch/hatch them. One value per stat ranging from 0-31 I am not going to explain IV breeding here because, damn. IVs also affect the type of Hidden Power your pokemon can have.
Moves
Pokemon can learn many moves, but they can only have four. There are four main ways for pokemon to learn moves
Level Up: Naturally learned by leveling up to a certain level
Egg Moves: Moves that can be learned by breeding with certain pokemon with certain moves
TM/HM: Using a TM or HM
Move Tutors: This includes NPCs and using BP at the Battle Maison
Type: Determines a moves effectiveness on a pokemon
Physical: Uses the attacking pokemon’s Attack stat and defending pokemon’s Defense stat. Example Take Down
Special: Uses attacking pokemon’s Sp. Atk. stat and defending pokemon’s Sp. Def stat (With the exception of Psyshock) Example Flamethrower
Other: Can raise or lower stats. Inflict status ailments. Recover HP and other neat things. Example Swords Dance
Same Type Attack Bonus (STAB): A bonus a pokemon's move will get if the move and pokemon are the same type. If a fire pokemon uses flamethrower. The boost is *1.5
Contact: Some moves make direct contact with pokemon this can cause abilities such as static or rough skin to trigger. There is no way for you to tell if it makes contact. Unless you look it up. Most of the time it is easy to tell.
Feel free to ask questions and add info. If you reply with helpful info I'll put it in the OP. I'll also be editing and updating this so it looks prettier. There will be a follow up topic with basic strategies and team building help some time this week.

Re: Pokemon battling basics
There are also Juices in X and Y. Here's a useful page on what Juices do.
EDIT: I also have a better type chart, it's easy to understand, colorful, and should easily format to fit the forum's layout. If you'd like it, that is.

I resized the image for you, ToonStink. If you're curious about the HTML code I'll PM it to you.
Re: Pokemon battling basics
Why did it need to be resized?

Re: Pokemon battling basics
Because it was fucking huge. It went off the screen. I made it fit so people with any sized monitor can view it and it will automatically size to the forum borders.

Re: Pokemon battling basics
Only a quarter of it was actually on the screen. HE-WHO-MUST-NOT-BE-NAMED must have fixed it.

Well, because it was huge, it was cut.KENDARRR wrote:No, the other one was just huge.ToonStink wrote:Is the other image cut?
It was also very wide so shrinking it down wasn't feasible. It would have made the text too small. A tall chart works better since it doesn't have to be shrunk as far.

I'm talking about the Greninja. You should be able to see it's moves, stats typing and ability.
